Mazda i-ELOOP Regenerative Braking System Improves Economy by 10%

mazda-i-eloopMazda today revealed that a newly developed regenerative braking system for passenger cars capable, the first of its kind to use a capacitor, will improve fuel economy by 10 percent. The new i-ELOOP system will debut on a production vehicle in 2012, and judging by the photo they released, they are referring to the new Mazda6 sedan.

The i-ELOOP system collects energy when you stamp on the brakes and stores it for later use in other on-board electric systems, like the climate control, audio system and other devices. If you’re wondering how this saves fuel, it’s because these devices would have otherwise been powered directly from the engine.

2013 Mazda CX-5 bravely takes on CR-V, Escape

Mazda is about to join a fight so vicious you have to question the automaker's sanity. Not only that, but the Japanese car company has decided to start from scratch, not only creating a new vehicle, but also basing it on the newly developed and challenging technology blueprint that Mazda calls Skyactiv.

The result is Mazda's 2013 CX-5, a small crossover SUV due in February to battle entrenched favorites Ford Escape and Honda CR-V, both of which are getting overhauls and therefore, presumably, will be even more popular. Perhaps Mazda also could try standing on its head, humming Ride of the Valkyries while hitting fastballs off Yankee closer Mariano Rivera. Just to keep things interesting.

Hoist one to game Mazda for heroic effort.

BBR upgrades for Mazda MPS models

Tuning company BBR has developed a series of upgrades for the Mazda 2.3-litre DSI turbo engine, which powers the MPS versions of the Mazda 3 and 6.

The tuning upgrades are available in three phases. Phase one consists of a simple ECU remap, which BBR claims not only boosts peak outputs to 290bhp and 330lb-ft (gains of 34bhp and 50lb-ft) but also improves throttle response and the response of the turbo boost map, whilst reducing fuel consumption at cruising speeds.

Boosting engine output to a claimed 318bhp and 370lb-ft, the phase two upgrade costs £1645 with a fitting charge of £395. The second phase adds a high-flow fuel pump, uprated high-flow turbo inlet hoses, a performance air filter a stainless steel exhaust downpipe with sports catalyst.

Mazda reports loss in fiscal first half

Mazda is reporting a 14.4 billion yen ($185 million) loss for the latest quarter and is now projecting a big annual loss instead of a profit due to the sluggish global economy and high yen. Mazda Motor Corp. is among Japanese manufacturers facing a similar business environment just as their production was starting to recover from the March 11 disaster in northeastern Japan.
